Delnice is the centre of Gorski kotar and, with 4451 inhabitants (census 2001), it is also the largest place. It is situated in Delničko Polje (valley) and surrounded by hills (Drgomalj, Petehovac and Japlenški Vrh). An interesting fact about Delnice is that, at an elevation of 698 m, it is also the highest town in Croatia. Delnice is the centre of forestry and wood processing industry. Its favourable situation on the country's major transit routes has made Delnice into an important centre of tourism, trade and sports. Delnice boasts numerous walks in the green and trim tracks, as well as several natural and cultural heritage sites under protection in its immediate vicinity.
The town has long enjoyed a reputation of a health resort thanks to its mountain climate that is found to be stimulative in medical terms (the air baths). That is why Delnice is a destination recommended for high-altitude athletic training, but also for active holidays, recreation, or walking tours. The fresh mountain air, enriched by a scent of conifers, works as a natural aromatherapy.
