Fauna
The otter is a very rare animal species in Gorski kotar. It is therefore under strict protection and appreciated for its aesthetic value. The presence of the otter is an undisputable indicator of clear waters. Range: the Upper Kupa
The crayfish is very rare due to its sensitivity to changes in water temperature and pollution. Therefore, in Croatia it can only be found in the freshwaters of Gorski kotar. Its range is broader in the winter and narrower in the summer.
The wolf, as one of the most endangered species and one that has become extinct in many parts of Europe, is under strict protection.
The lynx is a protected species. After almost a hundred years of near extinction, it can again be found on Risnjak, which has been named after the animal (ris). Along with the wild cat and two species of the frog, the lynx enjoys the status of a natural monument.

Flora
The edelweiss (Leontopodium alpinum) can be found close to the highest peaks of the Risnjak massif, as well as on the nearby Bijele and Samarske Stijene (set aside as the strict nature reserve). Thanks to its rarity and exceptional beauty, the edelweiss has become very popular. It is a common inspiration to authors of souvenirs, and its name is often used for promotional purposes.
The orange lily (Lilium bulbiferum) still decorates the slopes of Petehovac and other hills even though it is an endangered species and therefore under special protection. Its gorgeous star-shaped flowers are bright orange, with an unusual slightly bitter smell.
