The upper course of the Kupa river is the territory divided among Delnice and the neighbouring municipalities of Brod Moravice and Čabar. Its northern part is also known as the Kupa (Brodska) valley. In terms of tourism, this is the most developed part not only in the Delnice area but also in the entire Gorski kotar. The lowest points in this part of the Kupa's course are at about 220m above sea level, whereas the surrounding peaks of the Risnjak-Drgomalj mountain group have an average height of 800-1000 m. Because it is much lower than the steep hills surrounding it and because it has a relatively warm and mild climate, the Kupa valley is often interestingly described as a warm wedge driving into the cold mass of Gorski kotar. As a result of such favourable climatic conditions, this tiny corner of Gorski kotar is characteristic in that it enables such agricultural activities as maize and even wine growing. However, what local farmers are particularly proud of are their orchards, even though these have become quite a rarity these days. They still grow some old sorts of apples and gladly offer them to their visitors. The Kupa and its tributaries, the Kupica in particular, are a "promised land" for sport fishing (trout, grayling, chub). Most of the Kupa valley is intersected by hiking trails being part of the Gorski kotar Hiking Trail (Goranski planinarski put - GPP). As such it is very popular among hikers.
In hydromorphological terms, the Kupa valley is a canyon with a number of small basins, i.e. hollows on either sides, almost all of them nesting pretty hamlets. The largest place in the Kupa valley is Brod na Kupi, one of several border crossings to the Republic of Slovenia. Even though it is home to only 176 inhabitants, the village represents the Kupa valley on a small scale and boasts a rich cultural and historical heritage. The most interesting sight is the castle built by the Zrinski counts, which dominates the village centre, today becoming a forestry and heritage museum. There are many ways to enjoy the beauty of the Kupa valley and get to know it better: one can go rafting or canoeing or swimming, one can have a "hydromassage" at small rapids at the Pritiske beach in the vicinity of Gusti Laz. Fishing licences are available for those wishing to enjoy sportfishing or fly-fishing. Everyone is welcome at Mance Hotel and choose some of their delicious specialties.
