The territory of the town of Delnice with its total population of 6,262 is the central area of Gorski kotar, and it is the region with the greatest "relief energy" in the whole of Croatia, i.e. the largest difference in elevation between two geographical points: the lowest spot is in the Kupa valley (elevation 210 m), and the highest peak (1,528 m) is in the Risnjak National Park, near the village of Crni Lug. This natural characteristic accounts for great differences in the climate, vegetation, opportunities for agriculture, and even the mentality of the people inhabiting this relatively small area. All these variances blend to make a unique natural tourist product of great value and potentials. The region is situated along Croatia's major transit routes and is well connected with other parts of the country (road, railway). In this context, particularly significant is the Delnice pass, i.e. the Delnice corridor, with the zones of adjoining clearances that make the area very important in terms of transit. The Rijeka- Zagreb new motorway has shortened travelling distances: travelling by car, it now takes only about 30 minutes to get from Rijeka to Delnice, and the drive from Zagreb lasts just over one hour. Alternatively, travellers can take the old Zagreb-Rijeka main road. Passing through numerous villages and places of interest, the road today really lives up to its original name: the Louisian historic-tourist road. In Delnice, the road from Slovenia (Ljubljana-Kočevje-Delnice) joins the old Louisian road from the north, thus underlining the transit importance of the region. Few kilometres from Delnice, in Brod na Kupi, is an international border crossing to the Republic of Slovenia.
